Vol. 353 No. 10

Written Answers. - County Galway Level Crossing.

209.

asked the Minister for Communications the reason an automatic level crossing has not been erected at Gurrane, Oranmore, County Galway; and if he will have CIE give an commitment as to when such a crossing will be provided.

The improvement of the approach road to the crossing was identified as essential before automation could be proceeded with. The necessary works were completed by Galway County Council in March 1984.

The automation of Gurrane level crossing requires an order by the Minister for Communications under section 22 of the Transport (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1971. On 1 August 1984 I agreed in principle to the making of the necessary order. Under the legislation the costs of automating the crossing fall to be borne by CIE and Galway County Council in equal shares. The carrying out of the work on the level crossing is a matter for CIE and as soon as the board are in a position to proceed with the work involved it will be possible for me to make the necessary order. I have asked CIE to ensure that in conjunction with the county council the automation of Gurrane level crossing is carried out as an immediate priority.
