Vol. 354 No. 4

Written Answers. - Farmers' Health Contributions.

648.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that many farmers are receiving demands for the health contribution and other levies from the health boards and at the same time receiving similar demands from the Revenue Commissioners; the action, if any, he proposes to take to rectify the matter; and if he will make a statement on the situation.

The Revenue Commissioners are responsible for the collection of health contributions from farmers in respect of liabilities arising on or after 6 April 1984. However, health boards are responsible for the collection of arrears outstanding in respect of periods prior to that date. Consequently a farmer in arrears with health contributions will receive separate demands from the two collection agencies.

The Minister for Finance is responsible for the income levy. The Minister for Labour is responsible for the youth employment levy. It is understood that similar arrangements apply in respect of these levies.
