asked the Minister for the Environment the number of engineers employed in each local authority in (a) 1974 and (b) 1984: and the number of outdoor staff employed in (a) 1974 and (b) 1984.

Detailed information on the lines sought is not available in my Department in respect of the year 1974. Set out hereunder is the information sought in respect of the year ended 31 December 1983, the latest date for which such information is available. The information has been gathered from returns furnished by local authorities to my Department. The term "outdoor staff" is taken to relate to servants employed by local authorities.
