Vol. 354 No. 10

Written Answers. - North-South Goods Traffic.

652.

asked the Minister for Finance the total value of good passing through the Newry Road customs station going (i) southwards and (ii) northwards for each of the last five years.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that imports and exports of freight traffic in the Dundalk area may be processed by Customs and Excise either at the customs station in Dundalk or at Carrickcarnan frontier post. Prior to April 1980, some of this traffic was also processed at Drumbilla frontier post. Records are not maintained in such a manner as would enable separate figures on the lines requested to be given in respect of the customs station in Dundalk alone, without the expenditure of an inordinate amount of official time.

The value of freight traffic in respect of which import or export entries were processed at Dundalk Road station or the frontier posts mentioned since 1979 is as follows:

Year

Imports

Exports

£

£

1979

629,488,614

422,348,135

1980

557,058,472

492,305,488

1981

664,340,087

458,470,524

1982

641,633,665

529,724,594

1983

765,321,115

673,589,439

1984 (Jan.-Sept. incl.)

671,755,012

549,988,244

In general, most of the imports concened were processed at Dundalk Road station, while the bulk of the exports were processed at Carrickcarnan frontier post. However, where detailed examination of export consignments was necessary, this was carried out at Dundalk Road station.
