Mr. Coughlan

asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the proposed extension to the new gymnasium at Ballyshannon vocational school, County Donegal; and if additional expenditure has been approved for this much-needed extension.

I propose to take Questions 595 and 596 together.

Working drawings for the proposed new school have been received from the Vocational Education Committee's consultants and are under examination in my Department at present. It is not possible at this stage to say when work on the new school will commence. The position in regard to an extension to the physical education facility was dealt with in my response to Question 278 of 2 February 1984.

The position in relation to the proposed extension to Carrick vocational school is that architectural planning has been completed. Bills of quantities and tender documents, recently received from the County Donegal Vocational Education Committee are under examination in the Department. When this examination has been completed and on the assumption that the bills are satisfactory, the question of releasing the project for tender will be considered.

The contract at present in progress for the extension includes some remodelling of existing accommodation and will provide overall ten permanent classrooms, a general purposes room and a remedial classroom, together with such ancillary facilities as a library, a teachers' room and a utility room. It is not in accordance with normal practice to disclose details of the cost of individual projects.
