Vol. 355 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schull (Cork) Pier.

341.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry when work will commence on the extension to Schull Pier, County Cork; and the time scale for the completion of the work.

As the Deputy may be aware, my Department had been considering a substantial development scheme, including an extension to the pier, for Schull harbour when it came to light that the existing pier, which will be the basis for the new scheme, was deteriorating rapidly. Following a survey of the damage, it was concluded that a boring survey of the pier foundations would be necessary before repairs could be undertaken, towards the cost of which I had approved a substantial grant to Cork County Council. The results of the boring survey are expected shortly but until they are examined I cannot say when the repairs to the existing structure, which are essential to the main scheme, can be put in hands.
