Vol. 355 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rosslare (Wexford) Coastline.

372.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the beach at Rosslare, County Wexford, has dropped by seven feet and that the coastline has eroded to the degree that the golf course, hotels and residences are under severe threat; and if he is also aware that the village of Rosslare may be cut in two if remedial action is not carried out immediately; if he will, therefore, ensure that beach nourishment is provided on the beach from Kelly's Hotel to the 7th green of the golf course; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the position obtaining at Rosslare Strand where the level of the beach has dropped by approximately four feet over the past ten years. However, the coast protection works carried out at Rosslare between 1957 and 1965, which have been maintained by the Commissioners of Public Works, have been successful in holding the beach line, thus averting further recession of the coastline. The question of remedial action, involving the supply of further nourishment to the beach, is under consideration.
