Vol. 355 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recycling of Waste.

27.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his Department are involved in any initiative to encourage recycling of waste for energy purposes.

My Department's involvement in waste recycling arises mainly in the context of the waste collection and disposal services operated by local authorities. The Department have, on a number of occasions, encouraged the authorities to provide facilities for the recovery of certain wastes and will continue to do so, as appropriate. Consideration of any initiative involving recycling for energy purposes would primarily be a matter for the Department of Energy.

Is the Minister aware that there was a pilot scheme carried out in his constituency by the Department of Energy in relation to the recycling of waste? Would he be familiar with it, or know whether it was successful?

Yes, I was one of those who initiated that scheme as a member of Wicklow County Council.

Was is successful?

I think it was partly successful. One could use the energy in other ways which would have rendered it more successful.

This conversation is not suitable for Question Time.

Could the Minister say how many local authorities are engaged in the recycling of waste or pilot schemes of that nature?

No, I have no indication other than the one to which the Deputy has referred.

Is that the only one?

That is the only one of which I am aware. I am sorry I have not got information with regard to any other counties.

The remaining questions will appear on next Tuesday's Order Paper.
