Vol. 355 No. 6

Written Answers. - River Drainage.

382.

asked the Minister for Finance the present position regarding the proposed drainage of the River Flesk which flows through the parish of Glenflesk into the Lakes of Killarney; and if he will make a statement on the matter indicating the other Departments which provide schemes under which adjoining landowners could apply for grant aid in order to have this river drained.

The Commissioners of Public Works could undertake drainage works on the Flesk River only in the context of a comprehensive scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, for the entire Laune catchment in which it is situated. Having regard to existing commitments and pending the outcome of a review of arterial drainage policy, which is currently under consideration in my Department prior to submission to the Government, I could not say when the Laune might be reached in the arterial drainage programme. The provision of grant aid to land owners for the purpose of carrying out drainage works is a matter for the Department of Agriculture.
