Vol. 355 No. 7

Written Answers. - Cable Charges.

449.

asked the Minister for Communications the reasons for the recent large increase of 32 per cent in the rental charge made by Cork Communications in view of the fact that elsewhere in the country subscribers are paying much less.

The increase was approved by the Government following an independent financial assessment of the company's operations which I commissioned. The capital investment in providing service in Cork was exceptional, involving 62 miles of trunk cable, the longest of any cable system in the country. The charges applying in the different areas where cable systems operate are not comparable because of the variation in circumstances in each case.
