asked the Minister for Labour if he will give details of expenditure to date on International Youth Year, indicating the organisations and activities which have received financial assistance; if he will outline Government initiative on the International Youth Year; and if he will indicate how additional moneys recently allocated will be spent.
Written Answers. - International Youth Year.
In January of last year I established a committee, known as the National Committee for International Youth Year, to plan, stimulate, co-ordinate and assist activities for the year. The committee is representative of youth, Government, employer, trade union and vocational education interests.
In order to give a wide variety of interests an opportunity to participate in preparations for the year, an advisory council, representative of a large number of voluntary and statutory bodies, was established to support the committee in its work.
In its preparations for International Youth Year, the committee has endeavoured to secure widespread action for, and by, young people at national and local levels. The main emphasis for the year is being placed on activities planned and organised at local level, with action at national level being mainly supportive in nature. The support of the country's vocational education committees was obtained in promoting and assisting activity for International Youth Year throughout the country.
At the time of the establishment of the National Committee for International Youth Year, the Government agreed to provide total Exchequer assistance up to £140,000 in support of the year. To date grant allocations have been made by the committee as follows:
£43,500 allocated to vocational education committees for the promotion of International Youth Year activity at local level throughout the country.

In view of the level and extent of activity planned for International Youth Year, particularly at local level throughout the country, the Government decided in the recent budget to provide a sum of £150,000 to fund further youth initiatives during International Youth Year.
The additional funds at the disposal of the committee will be used to assist projects and events intended to enhance the impact of International Youth Year. The specific designation of grant assistance in this case is for the National Committee for International Youth Year to decide.
