Vol. 355 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Timber Exports.

10.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the volume and value of unprocessed timber exported in 1984; and the destinations of the particular consignments.

The Deputy will appreciate that statistics relating to trade in timber and timber products are compiled by the Central Statistics Office. In so far as my Department are concerned the extent to which information of the kind sought is available relates primarily to timber sold from State forests under the tender system to purchasers with addresses outside the State. In 1984 such sales, all of which were to purchasers with addresses in Northern Ireland, amounted to some 61,500m³ valued at £1.12 million. This volume represented well under 10 per cent of total tender sales.

My Department are also aware that in 1984 the volume of pulpwood size material exported to non-EC countries under licence from the Department of Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism was 24,500 tonnes, including 8,000 tonnes sold by my Department under specific contractual arrangements.
