599.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of people arrested, charged, and convicted under the Offences against the State Act in each year of its operation.

600.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons detained, charged and convicted under the Offences against the State Act on an annual basis for the years 1975 to 1984, inclusive.

601.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of arrests, charges and convictions under the Offences against the State Act by the section of the Act under which people were arrested, charged and convicted for the years 1980 to 1984, inclusive.

Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 599 to 601 inclusive together. The following table sets out the number of persons arrested under the Offences against the State Act, 1939, for the years 1972 to 1984 (inclusive) the only years for which statistics are available. It also sets out the number of persons charged following such arrests.

It should be pointed out, however, that the figures for the number of persons charged with offences include those charged with offences other than offences under the Offences against the State Act — for example firearms offences.

I am informed by the Garda Commissioner that the other statistics sought are not available and could only be compiled by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of Garda time.
