Vol. 356 No. 5

Written Answers. - Railway Electrification.

473.

asked the Minister for Communications the cost of railway electrification per mile exclusive of financing charges, interest etc. in each of the member states of the European Community.

The capital cost of the HowthBray rail electrification project, including rolling stock, amounted to £87.5 million. That amount is exclusive of capitalised interest charges. The project involved the electrification of 23.6 miles of railway.

The information sought by the Deputy is not available in relation to the other member states of the European Community. In any event, because of differences in current and historical circumstances, cost structures and so on, in different countries, comparisions between such figures, even if available, would be of questionable validity as would the conversion of the data above to a cost per mile.
