Vol. 356 No. 7

Written Answers. - Exploitation of Part Time Workers.

656.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware of the gross exploitation of part time workers, especially in the case of women, in respect of the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Act, the Holidays (Employees) Act and the Unfair Dismissals Act; the proposals, if any, he has in mind to remedy these abuses; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I would be glad to receive any information available to the Deputy about specific cases of exploitation of part time workers of which he may be aware. I will have that information taken into account in reviewing the legislation referred to in the question.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware. provision was made in the Protection of Employees (Employer's Insolvency) Act, 1984, to reduce to 18 hours the threshold for qualification for the protection of the Unfair Dismissals Act, the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Act and the Redundancy Payments Acts. I intend to keep the position of part time workers under review with a view to considering what further improvements may be desirable and feasible.
