Vol. 356 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Galway Road Works.

489.

asked the Minister for the Environment the reason provision for the construction of hard shoulders on the Galway-Limerick road has not been included in the grant allocation which was recently made to Galway County Council for 1985; and if he will now direct part of the money allocated for hard shoulder construction on other routes in County Galway to this route and, specifically, to a one mile stretch of road on either side of Kiltiernan national school where national school children are at present walking along the carriage-way of a national primary route which is a highly dangerous situation and must be corrected immediately.

It is necessary to provide paved hard shoulders along many miles of the national primary roads in County Galway. The work has been going on for years on a priority basis and this year it is already in progress on the Kinnegad to Galway Road (N.6) in accordance with the road grant provision. This programme will, it is intended, continue and the provision of paved shoulders in the location in question will be considered in the determination of the future programme of works.
