Maximum permitted gross weight limits in respect of vehicles in use in this country are prescribed in the Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 1983, as follows:
Category of Vehicle |
Maximum weight(Vehicle plus load) |
2 axled vehicle |
16,260 kilograms |
2 axled trailer |
18,000 kilograms |
3 axled vehicle or 3 axled trailer |
24,390 kilograms |
4 axled vehicle or 4 axled trailer |
30,490 kilograms |
4 axled articulated vehicle |
32,520 kilograms |
4 axled road train |
32,520 kilograms |
5 axled articulated vehicle |
38,000 kilograms |
5 axled road train |
38,000 kilograms |
A maximum weight of 10,500 kilograms is also prescribed in respect of the driving axle of an articulated vehicle and 10,170 kilograms in respect of any other axle.
Enforcement of the weight regulations is primarily a matter for the Garda Síochána. In 1984, I initiated a three year programme to provide more weigh-bridges to supplement the existing weighing facilities available to the Garda. Under this programme additional weigh-bridges are being installed by road authorities at selected sites throughout the country. The estimated cost — £250,000 to £300,000 per annum — is being financed by grants from my Department.
