Vol. 356 No. 7

Written Answers. - National Road Standards.

498.

Mr. Coughlan

asked the Minister for the Environment in view of the fact that the policy and planning framework for roads document outlines standards for national secondary routes, i.e. 7.3 metre carriageway with 3 metre shoulder on either side, if it is intended that national secondary roads which do not meet these standards will be downgraded.

Paragraph 3.4 of Policy and Planning Framework for Roads (PI. 2948) indicates that the minimum standard for all national primary routes and for heavily used sections of national secondary routes will be a 7.3 metre carriageway with 3 metre paved shoulders on either side. It is intended to bring these heavily used sections of the national secondary routes up to this standard as speedily as resources permit and accordingly it is not proposed to downgrade any of these routes.
