Vol. 356 No. 7

Written Answers. - River Boyne Pollution.

509.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the serious pollution in the River Boyne; if his Department has any plans to deal with the matter; if he is aware of the necessity for a treatment plant; the plans his Department have to assist in the provision of this much needed facility; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Monitoring of water quality in the River Boyne indicates that the river is in a generally satisfactory state with slight pollution being recorded at a few points. I am aware that a deterioration in water quality has occurred in the estuary and that sewage discharges have contributed to this. I understand that Drogheda Corporation have recently received and are examining their consultant's report on the options for sewage disposal. When the consultant's report and the corporation's recommendations thereon are received in my Department, they will be given early consideration.
