In the five year period 1 March 1980 to 1 March 1985 the maximum CIE passenger fares (excluding schoolchildren's fares) increased by an average of 108 per cent. The consumer price index increased by 92.76 per cent in the five year period November 1979 to November 1984. CIE's applications for increases in fares and rates are subject to approval by the National Prices Commission which has found the increases to be justified.
