asked the Minister for Finance the number of taxpayers now falling within (a) the 35 per cent tax band; (b) the 48 per cent tax band; and (c) the 60 per cent tax band.

Taking account of the income tax proposals announced in this year's budget, it is provisionally estimated that there will be about 970,000 persons effectively liable to income tax in 1985-86. In about 120,000 of these cases couples have elected or have been deemed to have elected to have the income of both spouses assessed on the husband, giving a total of about 850,000 taxpaying units. The breakdown of the 850,000 by marginal tax rate bands is estimated as follows:
