Vol. 356 No. 10

Written Answers. - Deployment of Gardaí.

690.

asked the Minister for Justice the total number of gardaí in the DMA.

691.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí in the DMA engaged in duties under the following headings: (1) headquarters duties; (2) full time clerical administration work in stations other than HQ; (3) protection of public buildings including Dáil Éireann; (4) protection of embassies; (5) protection of members of Judiciary and other public figures; and (6) protection of bank, cash-in-transist and other financial institutions; and if he will provide the aggregate figure for all these categories.

Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 690 and 691 together. The overall Garda strength in the Dublin metropolitan area, excluding Garda headquarters, was 3,997 on 28 February 1985, the latest date for which figures have been compiled.

The Garda authorities have informed me that, at the end of last month, a total of 841 members of the force based at the Dublin metropolitan area headquarters (Harcourt Square and Dublin Castle) were assigned to various operational and administrative duties centralised at the area headquarters and that, in addition, 108 members were engaged full time on clerical work at stations in the Dublin metropolitan area.

As regards the particulars sought under headings (3) to (6) in Question No. 691, it would be contrary to established practice to give the number of gardaí assigned to protection duty. The allocation of manpower between protection duty and other duties varies from time to time and is a matter for the local Garda officers having regard to available resources, local circumstances, other demands on Garda services and the time of day or night.
