At 31 December 1983 (the latest date for which final figures are available) the approximate area of State plantations in County Mayo was 23,500 hectares and the plantable reserve was 10,500 hectares. However, a substantial proportion of the latter would not be immediately available for planting for various reasons, e.g. being subject to grazing or turbary rights.
