Vol. 356 No. 11

Written Answers. - National School Caretaker Post.

543.

asked the Minister for Education if her Department will outline the job description and conditions of work for the post of primary school caretaker; if she will confirm the level of wages and the extent to which there is flexibility as to which hours of the day have to be worked; the extent of the grant from her Department for the creation of this post; the extent to which her Department has a function in any aspect of decision-making in relation to this post; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The duties of caretakers employed in national schools are determined by the individual boards of management. Conditions of service in relation to hours of duty, annual leave, sick leave etc., are those appropriate to full time employment. My Department's function is one of sanction of the appointment and of ensuring that the general conditions of the scheme are complied with.

The rates of pay are based on those payable to comparable staff employed by the local vocational education committee. My Department pay the full cost of wages and employers' PRSI.
