Vol. 359 No. 9

Written Answers. - Post Primary Special Education.

353.

asked the Minister for Education the provision that is being made for post primary education for mildly mentally handicapped children.

In order to assist post primary schools in catering for the second level educational needs of pupils who have been catered for up to that stage in special classes in primary schools my Department will to the extent of resources available authorise a teaching post in an appropriate post primary school in addition to the normal quota. Such additional resources are at present provided in 16 post primary schools and this provision is being expanded. A number of applications are at present under consideration in connection with the authorisation of further posts for the school year 1985-86. An appropriate curriculum to meet the needs of these pupils is also being prepared.
