asked the Minister for the Environment the number of vehicles which (a) passed the roadworthy test with no defects; (b) passed on a re-test following rectification of defects; and (c) failed the test.

Note: In some of the cases, referred to in column 3, defects detected on test are remedied by the tester and a retest is not required.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number, by relevant category, of vehicles and trailers submitted for the compulsory roadworthiness test in each of the years 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984 respectively.

The provisions of the European Communities (Vehicle Testing) Regulations, 1981, became fully operational on 1 January 1983. No vehicles were tested in 1981. Some vehicles were tested in 1982 in anticipation of the requirements operative from 1 January 1983.

The statistics compiled by my Department are intended to monitor vehicle testing standards and the records primarily relate to the number of tests and the results rather than the number of vehicles. Some vehicles undergo more than one test before being passed. The recorded available information is, as follows:
