Vol. 359 No. 10

Written Answers. - Road Safety Year.

18.

asked the Minister for the Environment the measures under consideration to mark 1986 as Road Safety Year in the Community.

Arrangements in connection with Road Safety Year, 1986, have not yet been at EC level. The Resolution designating 1986 as Road Safety Year in the Community, which was adopted by EC Council of Transport Ministers during the Irish Presidency, provided that the Commission should submit proposals for action in the area of road safety to the Council.

The Commission has indicated the general areas in which action is proposed in connection with Road Safety Year. Action is envisaged in the areas of road safety publicity, legislation and research. Detailed proposals are still under consideration by the relevant groups of the EC Council and Commission.

My Department are keping in close touch with developments at EC level. Full account will be taken of whatever proposals finally emerge. As regards road safety publicity, which is likely to be one of the key elements of Road Safety Year, it will be a matter for the National Road Safety Association to consider what action might be taken in the context of its programme for 1986.

I would hope also that other bodies, particularly in the private sector, will be willing to participate with the National Road Safety Association so as to ensure that the special opportunity which 1986 presents to achieve further improvements in road safety, will be utilised to the full.
