Vol. 359 No. 10

Written Answers. - Construction Industry.

21.

asked the Minister for the Environment in view of the important role played by the construction sector in the economic life of the European Community, if he considers that the Community institutions have a role to play in order to help establish an environment conductive to the recovery and development of the construction sector; and the measures being considered to stimulate the industry at Community level.

To the extent that policies agreed or adopted at Community level support the construction industry by the provision of finance for infrastructural development with a view to improving the general economic situation in member countries, such policies also help to establish an environment which is conducive to the development of the construction sector. As regards the final part of the question, while I am aware of a recent statement in this regard which was incorporated in the Commission's programme for 1985, I am not aware of any proposed Community measures which are designed specifically to stimulate this sector. However, I will be keeping in touch with the situation with a view to ensuring that the construction industry in Ireland derives the maximum benefit from any measures adopted at Community level.
