Vol. 359 No. 10

Written Answers. - Off-Shore Drift Net Salmon Fishing.

22.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry in view of the Government's strategy for phasing out of the off-shore drift net salmon fishery as part of its plans for the future development of the salmon industry, if he will make a statement on the socio-economic aspects of the proposals for change especially in view of the importance of drift netting to the fishermen involved and the dependency on the industry of large sections of the west coast community.

The Government have made no decision on the question of phasing out off-shore drift netting for salmon. Suggestions made by the Central Fisheries Board in relation to the management of our salmon fisheries are being considered in the context of the White Paper on fisheries now being prepared.
