Vol. 360 No. 1

Written Answers. - New Aer Lingus Fleet.

17.

asked the Minister for Communications his plans with regard to the financing of a new Aer Lingus fleet over a period of time, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Aer Lingus are currently addressing the issue of replacement of their shorthaul jet aircraft fleet used on cross-channel and continental routes. A detailed fleet study is in hand and Aer Lingus are planning to develop a replacement strategy over the next year. Current estimates suggest that expenditure in the range of £450 million to £700 million will be required, with replacement commencing about 1988-89 and being phased over a five to ten year period. The Government will be expecting Aer Lingus to come forward in due course with specific proposals in respect of the acquisition and funding of fleet replacement.
