Vol. 360 No. 1

Written Answers. - Visits by Foreign Warships.

30.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the procedure that is taken when warships of foreign countries visit Irish ports, in order to verify that such warships are not on manoeuvre either immediately before or after such visits; and the steps that are taken to ensure that such warships are not either nuclear-powered or carrying nuclear missiles or missiles with nuclear warheads.

Upon receipt of an application for a foreign naval vessel to enter an Irish port, my Department consult with the appropriate authorities to verify that the visit does not form part of a naval evercise and that the vessel is not carrying nuclear weapons. It is not the practice to disclose details of the verification procedures employed in this connection.
