Vol. 360 No. 1

Written Answers. - Accommodation for Voting Purposes.

44.

asked the Minister for the Environment if alternative available accommodation could be used for voting purposes on election polling days instead of school accommodation.

Responsibility for the conduct of elections and referenda including the provision of accommodation for taking the poll is a matter for the appropriate returning officer. Under the electoral law, returning officers are empowered to use free of charge for the purpose of taking the poll any premises the expense of maintaining which is payable out of any rate as well as any school or any room in a school receiving a grant out of moneys provided by the Oireachtas. Where such accommodation is not available, returning officers may hire premises for the purpose of taking the poll.
