Vol. 360 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mountjoy Prison Statistics.

154.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of prisoners in Mountjoy; and the average duration of retention of a prisoner in months or years over the past year.

Limerick East): The number of prisoners in Mountjoy Prison on 28 June 1985 was 552 males and 33 females. As regards the second part of the question it is not clear what precise information is sought by the Deputy. All available statistical information relating to offenders in custody is contained in the annual report on the prisons and places of detention. Copies of these reports, up to and including the 1983 report, are available in the Dáil Library. In view of the present pressures on staff in the prisons who have to deal with very high numbers in custody it is not possible to provide further statistical material concerning the cases of approximately 3,600 offenders who passed through Mountjoy Prison during the past 12 months.
