Vol. 360 No. 5

Written Answers. - Copper Tubing Standards.

15.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if it is within his power to have imported copper tubing subjected to the same rigorous IIRS standards and kite marking as is demanded in relation to Irish manufactured copper.

Compliance with the standard for copper tubes (I.S. 238) is not demanded of any manufacturer.

The Institute for Industrial Research and Standards, however, operate a voluntary scheme whereby manufacturers can apply to have their copper tubing certified as meeting the requirements of this standard. Such certification is, in effect, an assurance of good quality and allows the manufacturer to use the Irish Standard Mark on the certified copper tubes. All manufacturers, whether indigenous or foreign, must satisfy the same stringent requirements before their product is certified by the institute.
