Vol. 361 No. 7

Written Answers. - Structural Safety Standards.

23.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his Department have undertaken any examination of safety standards in relation to the structural safety of tower blocks where gas is used for cooking or central heating; if he is aware of the improved safety standards for tower blocks recently specified and set by the British Department of the Environment; if any improvement in safety standards is planned in this country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While standards in relation to the structural safety of tower blocks as laid down in the proposed building regulations are constantly under review, I am advised that the existing standards are adequate to ensure the safety of the occupants. Local authorities and public bodies, including relevant professional and trade organisations, have been asked to regard the proposed regulations as having the force of law and I am satisfied that the requirements of the regulations with regard to structural safety standards, including the provision of gas installations, are being widely applied.

With regard to the British improved structural safety standards for tower blocks to which the Deputy refers, it has been indicated to my Department in response to inquiries to the Department of the Environment in the UK that no new structural standards have been issued by them. However, if the Deputy has some aspect other than structural safety standards in mind. perhaps he would send me details and I will be in touch with him further in the matter.
