Vol. 361 No. 12

Written Answers. - Road Improvement Grant.

65.

asked the Minister for the Environment when he proposes to give sanction to Drogheda Corporation for the repair and realignment of Magdalene Street and Patrick Street; the amount of money he proposes to allocate; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the roads in question do not form part of the network of national roads, primary responsibility for the planning and execution of any improvement works on the roads, including the timing and the provision of the necessary finance, rests with Drogheda Corporation.

The corporation submitted proposals for the reconstruction of Magdalene Street and Scarlet Street to my Department and requested special road grant assistance to meet the cost of the works estimated at £700,000. In June 1985, following an examination of the proposals, the corporation was requested to reassess the project with a view to identifying a more modest scheme of works which might be undertaken on as phased basis. A further submission has been received from the corporation and is being examined in my Department. A decision in the matter will be issued shortly.
