Vol. 362 No. 1

Written Answers. - Erin Foods (Mallow) Plant.

19.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the implications of the decision for agriculture in the area, and the food industry generally, he will urge Siúicre Éireann cpt to reverse its decision to close the Erin Foods plant in Mallow.

Despite strenuous efforts by the sugar company over a number of years to reverse the fortunes of the Erin Foods operation at Mallow, heavy losses continued to be incurred and were proving to be an unsustainable drain on the company's resources generally. In view of its obligations in respect of its other activities both at Mallow and elsewhere, the company has no alternative other than to decide to close the Mallow plant of Erin Foods at the end of the current season.
