Vol. 362 No. 1

Written Answers. - Western Package.

18.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the grants available for mountain fencing in this country; whether he has submitted any proposals to the European Economic Community to provide special grant-aid to farmers in the Connemara region for fencing, fertilising and other agricultural activities as promised by his Minister of State in 1984; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Grants of up to 70 per cent of the approved cost are available under the western package for the fencing and improvement of commonage and hill and mountain pastures in the west. Grants of up to 80 per cent of the approved cost are available for work on associated roads. The programme under which the package operates is subject to review at intervals of four years and the first such review is now under way. An announcement will be made when the review has been completed.
