Vol. 362 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tomato Growers' Scheme.

21.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the crisis situation for tomato growers as a result of the disastrous season just passed.

The poor weather conditions this year caused a reduction in tomato crop yields and adversely affected market demand. Steps have been taken already to enable growers to improve their competitiveness. A scheme of grants for the conversion of heating systems from oil to solid fuel was introduced at the beginning of the year and financial aid has also been provided for improved market co-ordination. It is important that growers should avail more fully of these schemes.
