Vol. 362 No. 1

Written Answers. - Insurance Cover.

47.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the reason for the continuing increase in insurance cover for motor cycles, in view of the fact that insurance companies only cover third party, which limits claims.

As with other types of insurance cover, increase in premium rates for motor cycle insurance reflect the continuing and substantial level of losses incurred by insurers providing this particular insurance.

It is not correct to say that insurers only provide third party cover for motor cycle risks, since comprehensive cover is also available. However, even in the case of a policy restricted to third party cover this does not of itself limit claims, because, under road traffic law, the cover granted for personal injuries must be unlimited.
