Vol. 362 No. 1

Written Answers. - Maudlintown (Wexford) Pollution.

68.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the pollution problem at Maudlintown, Wexford; his proposals to eliminate such pollution; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand from Wexford County Council, who have statutory responsibility for pollution control in the area, that they are satisfied that licence conditions imposed on industrial enterprises in the area under the Water Pollution Act, 1977, have already resulted in a substantial improvement in water quality in the area. Wexford County Council will continue to ensure that the provisions of licences are complied with and this should result in a further improvement of the situation. I have approved the preliminary report for the proposed Wexford main drainage scheme and my Department is awaiting further proposals from the local authority. The scheme will also have long term beneficial effects on water quality in the Maudlintown area.
