Vol. 362 No. 1

Written Answers. - Common Market Fishing Controls.

102.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will make a statement on his recent talks in Brussels with his fellow Community Ministers on tightening up Common Market fishing controls; and if he is in a position to give an assurance that more thorough policing of Community waters will act as a deterrent to illegal fishing in Irish waters.

At the Council of Fisheries Ministers held on 4 November 1985 the question of fishing controls was discussed in the context both of a Commission proposal on measures to be adopted to tighten controls under the existing Common Fishing Policy and of the impending accession of Spain and Portugal. The subject is still under examination by working groups of the Council and is expected to come before the Council again at its next meeting on 16 December 1985. I agree with the Deputy that more thorough policing of Community waters will act as a deterrent to illegal fishing in Irish waters.
