Vol. 362 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tax Evasion Statistics.

115.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of people who were convicted of tax evasion in the last five years and the number of those who received jail sentences in our courts.

In the years 1980 to 1984 inclusive 1,530 persons were convicted of evasion of taxes and duties under the care and management of the Revenue Commissioners. Jail sentences were imposed in six of these cases. In addition 3,947 convictions were imposed for failure to furnish statutory returns, etc., and more than 2,000 judgments were obtained in proceedings for recovery of arrears of tax. None of these involved jail sentences.
