Vol. 362 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Checkpoint.

32.

asked the Minister for Justice if there has ever been any seizures of arms or weapons at the roadblock in the Dundalk area; and how effective these road-blocks have been.

Limerick East): I assume that the question refers to the Garda checkpoint that has been operating on the Newry road north of Dundalk for the past two months. No firearms have been seized at this particular checkpoint since it was set up. The checkpoint is part of a series of additional measures that were introduced to combat terrorism and its effectiveness could not possibly be judged on criteria such as the absence of a seizure of firearms or explosives. The measures were introduced by the Garda Síochána following an assessment of the security situation and I am satisfied that the Garda would not have introduced the checkpoint if they did not consider it to be worth while.
