Vol. 362 No. 2

Written Answers. - Purchase of Helicopters.

45.

asked the Minister for Defence if it is proposed to purchase helicopters capable of night-flying; and if they will be available for the provision of services to and from the islands.

Three new helicopters intended mainly for search, rescue and air ambulance services were ordered in December 1982 and are due for delivery in early 1986. These helicopters will have night-flying capabilities. In addition, two further helicopters for use in conjunction with the new Naval Service patrol vessel are due for delivery shortly. These helicopters will also be capable of night-flying. The new helicopters will be engaged in the normal services provided by the Air Corps, including relief missions to service islands off the coast, when Air Corps personnel have been trained in their operation.
