Vol. 362 No. 2

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

54.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will arrange to pay unemployment benefit to a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

Entitlement to unemployment benefit is subject to the condition that a person must have at least 26 contributions paid or credited at the appropriate rate in the contribution period governing her entitlement to benefit. The entitlement of the person concerned to unemployment benefit is governed by her contribution record during the contribution period 6 April 1983 to 5 April 1984.

Inquiries are being made to establish whether her employment during this period was appropriate to a contribution class which provides cover against unemployment. When these inquiries, which are extensive, are completed her entitlement to unemployment benefit will be decided in the light of the outcome.

Mr. Cowen

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when a person (details supplied) in County Offaly will be paid her benefit. She has been signing on since 16 September last and as yet has received no payment.

The person concerned claimed unemployment benefit from 16 September 1985 but inquiries had to be made to establish whether she fulfilled the condition of being available for employment before her entitlement to unemployment benefit could be determined. The inquiries were recently completed and her claim was allowed at the appropriate rate, in her case, of £34.70 weekly. All arrears due, covering the period 16 September 1985 to 31 October 1985, after which she became incapable of work, will be issued this week. She has claimed disability benefit on and from 1 November 1985.

56.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when a non-contributory old age pension will be made to persons (details supplied) in County Tipperary.

It was decided on 6 September 1985 that the persons concerned were not entitled to old age pensions on the grounds that they failed to disclose their means. Following receipt of repeat claims, their entitlements were reinvestigated. The information previously sought has now been supplied and in the light of this they have been awarded old age pension at the maximum rate. The awards are effective from 23 May 1985 (date of transfer of a holding) in the case of the husband and 4 June 1985, when she reached the qualifying age, in the case of his wife. The appropriate pension books and the arrears due are in the course of issue.
