The Government's intentions in relation to reducing the number of grades in the Civil Service are set out in paragraphs 4.10, 4.11 and 4.12 of the White Paper Serving the Country Better. As a start the grade of staff officer will be absorbed in the executive officer grade. In addition, my Department are at present reviewing various grade structures to identify further possibilities for rationalisation.
