Vol. 362 No. 14

Written Answers. - PAYE Statistics.

44.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of persons paying PAYE in the years 1983-84, 1984-85 and 1885-86 to date.

The numbers of persons effectively liable to income tax under PAYE in respect of the years 1883-84, 1984-85 and 1985-86 are estimated as follows:

Year

Number

1983-84

864,000 (provisional)

1984-85

859,000 (provisional)

1985-86

860,000 (provisional)

In about 120,000 of the cases for each of the years 1983-84 and 1984-85 and in about 123,000 cases for 1985-86 couples have elected or have been deemed to have elected to have the income of both spouses assessed on the husband giving totals of 744,000, 739,000 and 737,000 taxpaying units respectively.

It is not possible to provide an estimate of the number of persons who have paid tax to date in respect of 1985-86. Information on the number of persons effectively liable to income tax under PAYE is available only in respect of a full income tax year and is not ascertainable until the relevant end of year returns from employers have been received and processed.
