Vol. 363 No. 2

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

39.

asked the Minister for the Environment when a new house grant will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Waterford.

There is no record in my Department of the receipt of an application for a new house grant from the person named.

40.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give early sanction to an application from Tipperary South Riding County Council for a special grant to carry out much needed road improvement works at Emly Road, Tipperary, County Tipperary, which now presents a grave hazard to the safety of the residents and on which many fatalities have occurred; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the road in question forms part of the network of regional roads, financial assistance towards the cost of such improvement works is normally confined to the block grant for roads which is paid annually by my Department and which may be used to supplement the provision made by the local authority, for such works, from their own resources.

A request from Tipperary (South Riding) County Council for a special grant towards the cost of road improvements at Emly Road, Tipperary, will be borne in mind in the determination of the 1986 road grant commitments, having regard to the level of funds available to me for road grants and the relative priority of the proposed works.

asked the Minister for the Environment the estimated cost of increasing the grant to first time house buyers to £2,000.

The additional cost in 1985 resulting from the doubling of the new house grant was £1.23 million. The extra cost in 1986 is estimated at £11 million which may however, be affected by the proportion of grants which mature for payment during the year at the old rate in respect of houses substantially completed before 1 May 1985.
