My Department proposed the introduction of a sheep carcase classification scheme to be carried out by existing departmental staff and funded fully by the Exchequer. This proposed scheme was not, however, acceptable to producer representatives who sought the introduction of a more elaborate scheme. I have indicated that I am prepared to consider the introduction of such a scheme provided the industry makes a contribution towards the cost involved. However, producers have indicated that they are not prepared to participate on this basis.
